The origin of the Alphonse Lavalee variety is not well known. It is believed to have been raised in a nursery in Orléans, around 1860, and named after the president of the French Horticultural Society. It is also assumed that Alphonse Lavalee is an old oriental variety or a hybrid of an oriental variety.
