The Stella sweet cherry variety was created in Canada, more precisely at the Agricultural Research Institute in Summerland. The history of the creation of the Stella sweet cherry variety begins at the John Innes Institute in Norwich, England. There, John Innes created three self-fertile hybrids. A little later, one of them was used to create the Stella variety. Thus, this variety is created by crossing the Lambert x John Innes variety 2420. The breeder is Dr. K.O. Lapins who, among other things, created the Lapins and Sunburst varieties.
