It was found in the small Hungarian village of Ujfeherto. According to a project that took place after the Second World War to find the best varieties for the area of Hungary, this variety entered commercial production in 1970. dr. Amy Lezzoni, a sour cherry breeder from the University of Michigan, brought this sour cherry to America in 1984, where it was recognized in 1998. It is named after Lake Balaton.
