Synonyms: Azhenka, Prune d’Ente, French Prune, Prune d’Agen, Prune d’Ast, Rote de Sergent
Agen is one of the oldest plum varieties grown in the world. It has a very interesting history. Already in the 12th century, during the Crusades, plum seedlings were brought to France, which were produced from seeds from Damascus. Benedictine monks tried to use these plums as starting material for grafting new plum seedlings, hence the name PrunedEnte, i.e. ente means coil in French. And that’s how the future Agen plum variety was born. Due to the high sugar content and other characteristics of the fruit, this plum has become a symbol for prunes in France.
