The Golden delicious variety originates from the USA. It was created as a accidental seedling on a farm in West Virginia in 1912. It has been in production since 1916. The farmer sold the reproduction rights for $5,000. Today it is still very popular, as well as new clones of this variety. It is harvested while the skin is still green, but even then it is ready for use. It is widely distributed all over the world. In France in 1970, it had a share of 65% in apple production.
