The Van variety originated at the Summerland Fruit Research Station, British Columbia, Canada. It was created as a result of free pollination of the Empress Eugenie variety. Pollination was done in 1936, selection in 1942, and it was put into production in 1944. It was named in honor of the famous horticulturist J.R. Van Haarlen. Due to the quality of the fruits and productivity, the Van variety spread very quickly around the world.
